071117 - Seodaemun Prison History Hall

Bookmark and Share
I walked for almost 45 minutes (including 10 minutes of innocent walk for losing my way) though being strongly advised by a ticket counter lady at the Deoksugung Palace to take a subway which cost only 1000won and took less than 5 minutes. Grrr…served me right for being a stingy poker!!!

Before reaching the Seodaemun Prison History Hall, I passed by the Independence Park. I’m trying to console myself, if I were to take the subway; I might miss this park, hihi.

After paying 1500won as admission fee (though some websites said 1000won) to Soedaemun Prison History Hall. It was built near the end of the Joseon Dynasty (~1910), where many Korean patriots of the Independence Movement were tortured and executed by the Japanese. Seodaemun Prison History Hall was built in remembrance of Seodaemun Prison, and to salute the Korean patriots.

One of the jail cells

A slightly bigger jail cell

Abortion chair for the women who got impregnated, by who, I have no idea.

Outside the jail cell

Historical Exhibit Hall

In Torture room, I saw frightening, recreated scenes with realistically audio effect of Korean victims being cruelly tortured. One of it is pulling off the nail or inserts a sharp object between the nail and flesh

Forgot the purpose of this room, short term memory loss after my dark chapter in the torture room

Execution room

Pulling the level to drop the wooden stool in the previous image

There’s a story about this tree, but I have forgotten

Basement jail cell

Extras preparing for a movie shooting

This time, I played smart and took a subway to Gyeongbokgung Station for my next destination, Gyeongbokgung Palace.

  1. Your picture below the torture room was a "court room", however the trails were implemented after Japan was sharply criticized for executing prisoners without trail.
The tree outside the execution room has the story to it that its trunk was hugged by the wailing prisoners prior to their execution by hanging. There is also a smaller tree inside the execution area, which people say doesn't grow big because of the grief it witnessed...
The underground cells in your second last picture were to keep female prisoners only...
